Musk threatened to bankroll primary challenges against Republicans who crossed Trump
The world's richest man signaled he would fund challengers to GOP senators who opposed Trump's nominees. Senators took the threat seriously.
In December 2024, as controversial cabinet picks awaited confirmation, Musk signaled online that he would support primary challengers to Republicans who opposed Trump's nominees, replying that those who oppose reform will lose their primaries. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis publicly criticized those making such threats as political opportunists.
In February 2025, The Hill reported that GOP senators feared Musk-funded challengers, and a Democratic senator said the threat helped Pete Hegseth and other contested nominees win confirmation. After Musk and Trump fell out in mid-2025, Musk turned the same threat on Republicans who voted for Trump's budget bill.
